These 4 Mistakes Are Killing Your Job Search And Costing You Offers

If your executive job search feels harder, longer, or more unpredictable than you expected, you are not imagining it. And you're not alone. The good news is, offers are still being made (we negotiated two this week).
In this issue, we call out the patterns we're seeing every day that lead to stalled searches, disappearing offers, and months of lost time and income. And most importantly, we share what you can do about it to regain momentum and land faster.
PSA: Don't Sabotage Your Search for One Opportunity
You nailed the interview. You hit it off with the hiring manager. You may have even talked about compensation.
This is the point when most job seekers stop looking for other opportunities and tell me things like, "I don't need help with my search because I have an opportunity I feel really good about."
And sometimes they get (and accept) the offer and we celebrate! But more often than not, here's what actually happens lately:
You waste months in a long interview process and then don't get the offer, forcing you to start your search from scratch.
There is a change in priority at the company, and they don't hire for that role at all, leaving you at the start line again.
You get the offer, but it's nothing like what you discussed with the hiring manager, and you leave disappointed. (This has happened a LOT lately.)
This market is unpredictable and unforgiving right now.
I posted this on LinkedIn earlier this week, and many people sent me horror stories about losing opportunities before or even at the offer stage and then having to start their search all over again.
You can't leave your search up to "I feel good about this opportunity." Or, "I think I'm going to get an offer any day."
If this is you, don't sabotage your search and waste months on the sidelines. Keep up the momentum by filling your pipeline with as many opportunities as possible.

4 Common Search Mistakes That Are Costing You Offers
This isn't 2019's job market. Or even 2022's. This is an unforgiving market, where even the most accomplished senior leaders are getting passed over. And what I hear most often from executive job seekers right now is, "I didn't think it was going to be this hard." And, "I had no idea it would take this long.
"What worked before likely isn't enough to work today. If your search is taking longer than expected, or you feel close but not closing, these four mistakes are likely the reason.
Mistake #1: Playing the Generalist Game
Are you a "Senior leader with 20+ years of experience and a proven track record of success." Great! So is everyone else.
This generic positioning is not cutting it for you at this level in this market. No one is hiring generalists right now, they're hiring specialists who can solve very specific problems. Without a clearly defined focus for your search and a hyper-targeted unique value proposition to differentiate you, you're invisible in this crowded market.
Mistake #2: Underwhelming Executive Branding
"I think my resume (or LinkedIn profile) is pretty good." If you want someone to choose you above your competition, pretty good isn't enough.
If your resume doesn’t clearly communicate your value for your ideal role, and your LinkedIn profile isn’t optimized for searchability and performance, you're losing opportunities before you even know they exist. Not sure? Book a Resume Review session with one of our experts.
Mistake #3: The Online Application Trap
Here's the truth: Executives don't get hired through job boards. They are a waste of your time and only lead to rejection right now. Instead, you need a comprehensive go-to-market strategy focused on the channels that actually open doors for senior leaders: your network, company outreach, and recruiter relationships.
Mistake #4: Interview Blind Spots
Getting interviews but not offers? You likely have a blind spot in your messaging, delivery, or executive presence. With executive interview processes now stretching to nearly 10 rounds, every interaction is high-stakes and you have to bring your A-game to really compete.Does any of this sound familiar?
If so, it's time to level up to meet the market.
