Are AI-Written Resumes Effective for Executive Candidates?

Executive candidates often ask me, "Can't I just use AI to write my resume?"

My answer? Yes, absolutely. It's not hard to ask ChatGPT to write a resume for your job search.

But just having a resume is not the actual end goal, is it? The goal is to land a good job offer. So if you used AI to write your resume, the next question is, "Are you getting interviews for your ideal role?"

If yes, great! If no, then you need to reevaluate your tools and strategy. It's easy to use AI to write a polished-sounding resume and then blame the weird economy and down-hiring market for not getting interviews. But that's not the whole story.

The candidates who invest the time and/or money to craft a standout resume, LinkedIn profile, and a multichannel go-to-market strategy are winning interviews and eventually landing great offers, even in this market.

Seriously, our team celebrates job offers with our clients on a weekly basis. But the candidates who are getting these offers are putting in the work to show up stronger. I posted this on LinkedIn earlier this week, and several executive recruiters weighed in with their thoughts.

Can You Really Trust AI to Review Your Resume? Here’s What the Data Reveals

You can ask 100 different people for feedback on your resume and you'll get 100 different answers. Turns out, it’s the same with AI tools. This issue has been coming up a lot lately, so I was thrilled to see that The Captivators, led by my friend and industry expert Erica Reckamp, conducted in-depth research to determine if job seekers can trust the advice AI provides when reviewing their resumes.

For their report, "2025 GenAI Resume Feedback Report," the team tested eight of the top AI platforms (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI, Grok, and Deepseek) by giving each one three different resumes: poor, fair, and strong, and asked for honest feedback.

The results were mixed: For the weaker resumes, AI tools did fine with basic tips like tightening up formatting, using stronger action verbs, or adding measurable results. But once the resumes improved, the advice started to unravel. The AI tools often contradicted one another, misread details, or gave surface-level feedback that did not make sense for senior-level professionals.

One of the biggest takeaways was the lack of consistency. What one tool praised, another criticized. Some offered valuable insights, while others suggested changes that could actually make a resume less effective, such as removing important leadership details or over-simplifying high-impact accomplishments.

The bottom line:

AI can be a helpful starting point, but it is no substitute for expert strategy and human insight, and this is especially true for senior leaders with complex careers. When it comes to marketing yourself for top-tier roles, you need more than keyword tweaks and formatting fixes.

You need a clear narrative, the right positioning, and a story that only real-world expertise can help you tell. And this is true for all aspects of an executive job search. There is a deluge of good advice online for early and mid-career job seekers.

But when the stakes are higher, careers are complex, and the needs of hiring companies are nuanced, general advice doesn’t cut it.
